While a clean mouth is very important to achieving
and maintaining health,
nutrition is the single most important of all the
required factors to insure that the mouth and body are healthy.
After all, an intact and properly functioning immune system is all that
stands between us and disease, whether it's infectious disease, a simple
cold, or cancer. A competent and optimally functioning immune system cannot
exist unless each and every cell in the body has what it needs, when it
needs it, to do its job properly; a concept called "cellular nutrition".
Putting it another way, "cellular nutrition is simply providing ALL
nutrients to the cell at optimal levels" which "allows the cell to determine
what it actually does and does not need". (Thanks go to Ray Strand, M.D. for
The additional factor that is fundamentally
important to know is that infection in the mouth elevates inflammation
throughout the body, and inflammation is becoming accepted as the cause of
most, if not all diseases, including heart attack and stroke. This is
covered thoroughly in The Oral Health Bible (Sept., 2003).
Inflammation throughout the body is a cause of oxidative
stress, and current medical research proves beyond any doubt
that oxidative stress is the cause of over 70 chronic
degenerative diseases. These diseases include Alzheimer's
dementia, fibromyalgia, MS, heart attack, stroke, diabetes,
macular degeneration, lupus, cancer and more. The common factor
in all these diseases is inflammation, and with approximately
75% of adults having some degree of gum disease, the role of gum
disease as a factor in many systemic diseases is one that is
becoming more apparent to the public and the dental and medical
professions almost daily.
