Dr. Michael Bonner has been practicing dentistry since graduating from the University of Texas Dental School in 1975, but in 1983 it was some of his patients with moderate to advanced gum disease willing to follow his advice that really motivated him to start paying attention to the importance and association of a healthy mouth, to a patient’s level of overall health. Dr. Bonner practices primarily oral surgery and implant dentistry usually two days a week and it should come as no surprise that he still enthusiastically coaches patients towards better oral and systemic health outcomes using the same products featured on this site. Dr. Bonner is a member of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, and the San Antonio District Dental Society. Dr. Bonner is also a Fellow of the International College of Oral Implantology. The future of “Body Health” will inevitably become more intimately associated with “Oral Health’, and the possibility of seeing this come to pass, is what keeps Dr. Bonner excited every single day.

Through these patients daily use of some oral health products and nutritional supplements he’d recommended, along with the usual cleanings or periodontal treatments, Dr. Bonner observed in many of these patients some changes in overall health and mood that simply bordered on the astonishing. Patients with oral infections who had been tired, perhaps depressed, not sleeping well and oftentimes in overall pain a few weeks ago, would come bouncing in full of energy, happy, and acting like they’d just gotten back from vacation!
Obviously something was affecting these patients in a very positive way, and it soon became obvious that helping patients help themselves achieve better oral health frequently had observable whole body health results.
Dr. Bonner’s perspective has been that if a patient’s’ mouth shows evidence of disease, there’s no question that their body is also dealing with the disease because the mouth and body share a common circulatory system. Many authorities target inflammation as the cause of most, if not all diseases, and mouth infections such as gingivitis and periodontitis are certainly a cause of inflammation. Fast forward to the present time with over eight hundred published studies having looked at the connection of chronic oral infections association with myriad systemic diseases such as heart attack and stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s, to IBS and Crohn’s disease, there’s the growing realization that a healthy mouth is absolutely required to have a healthier body. In 1991, Dr. Bonner became aware of the harmful effects of stinky gasses, called volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) on gum tissue. It turns out that VSC not only cause bad breath, but these stinky gases activate enzymes that break down tissue. For the next ten years Dr. Bonner presented seminars all over the USA and Canada, as well as Singapore and Malaysia on the importance of effective oral cleansing methods and products that virtually eliminate odor. While Dr. Bonner’s path in his search for the most effective (and safest) products over the last forty years has had many “zigs and zags”, he still practices dentistry with a whole body health focus.
Dr. Bonner believes that the mouth is a doorway to achieving peak health and wellness in all the body’s systems. His informative book The Oral Health Bible contains an action plan for taking charge of our oral health and it educates us and our doctors and dentists by detailing how many debilitating health problems – conditions such as arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, rheumatoid arthritis, and premature and low-birth-weight babies – are intimately linked to oral health and hygiene.
